GARDEN DAYS AT
THE MALL OF LOUISIANA
Weekends of April 7, 8, and 14, 2001

Saturday started with a flush of folks attending a Garden and Landscaping Exhibit in the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge. By the opening at 11:30 there were hundreds of gardeners and hopefuls for the BRDS Daylily members to visit with and talk growing and collecting daylilies. |

President Joe Goudeau and his wife Ginger had a super display table all set up for the public to see and to realize "They aren't just yellow anymore"! A few early blooms opened in time to be shown but the photos labeled with cultivar names were a fine stand in for the real thing.
Sue Gauthreaux, Ginger, Ashley Goudeau and Muriel Walker talked daylilies to any and all who would listen. |

Joe had a video of recent cultivars for viewing of even more blooms. Many folks love and grow daylilies from years past and were amazed at the variety now.
Most folks wanted information about growing daylilies as well as dividing the clumps they already grow. |
| It's the people! It was amazing to meet the people who love this hardy garden flower and fun to see where they called home. Ashley is keeping a map of our visitors. We spoke with a couple from Jerusalem on a holiday, a couple from Canada on a history research trip to St. Francisville, another couple from Canada on holiday and a daylily collector from Charleston, S.C. One couple from New Jersey had visited "a local garden at home" that turned out to be on the AHS National tour last year - and they didn't realize it! Many visitors were from towns with-in a hour or two drive and this was a family outing for them. We visited with all ages and met one young lady in Junior high that is in a program of plant study and she and Ginger started a mentor friendship. Many people mentioned they have their love of plants because of a family members that shared that love with them as a young person. BRDS goals include passing on the love and interest in daylilies. |

Culture sheets on growing daylilies and membership forms for the BRDS were a hot item. By Sunday at 6 PM, over 450 people had stopped by the table and talked as well as entered the daylily drawing for free daylilies to be given away next weekend after the exhibit closes. Visitors learned of our meetings and tours and of BRDS daylily folks willing to share plants and information. |
| The Garden Exhibition continued on Saturday, April 14. BRDS members were back at the tables, with more brochures, culture sheets and smiles. |
